10 top tips for charity shopping

Our Head of Retail, Laura James shares her top ten tips for finding a bargain in one of our charity shops.

1. Visit often

Fresh stock hits our shop floors throughout the day, every day so be sure to call in often to get the first pick of the best items.

2. Buy it now

As our stock is donated, no two pieces are the same. While this is great for finding those unique pieces, it does mean we don’t have extras out the back. If you like it, it may not be there if you come back, so buy it now!

3. Window shop first

Star pieces will have pride of place in windows or on display so make sure you check out these areas too.

4. Source a tailor or dressmaker to make alterations

Knowing you can make alterations will give you more options when charity shopping as you are able to pick up that must-have piece even if it doesn’t quite fit, or you can tailor it more to your taste.

5. Accessorise!

A statement necklace or unique scarf can transform a simple outfit at a reasonable cost.

6. Remember to try on clothes

Sizing varies across brands so, where possible, try before you buy.

7. Dress to shop

Wear clothing and footwear you are comfortable in to make it easier to change to try things on.

8. Be aware of fashion trends

Check out the high street to see what’s in fashion and then browse your local charity shop to see what you can find. Charity shops are an affordable way of experiment with new styles, trends and colours!

9. Set a budget

It can be easy to get carried away when you’re surrounded by so many bargains. Set a budget or even have a list of what key pieces you are looking for to keep track of what you are spending.

10. Feel good

There’s nothing like the buzz for finding that perfect piece! Remember when you buy from one of our shops, you get the added feel-good factor of knowing you’ve shopped sustainably and helped us make a difference to the lives of children with life-limiting conditions and their families in Wales.

Our 19 local shops across South and West Wales sell pre-loved clothing, electricals, books, toys, media and bric-a-brac all generously donated by our supporters. Click here to find your local shop.
