Paul Russ, one of our Tŷ Hafan dads, tell us why he enjoys volunteering at the Taff Trail Cycle Challenge each year and why it's important to him.
I have been marshalling at the Taff Trail Cycle Challenge as a sweeper with the help of others for eight years now I think, this will be the ninth or tenth – I can never remember.
As a parent of a child who has used Tŷ Hafan, I enjoy going on the ride and showing my support to the people who kindly give up their family time to help families like mine by doing this challenge and raising much-needed funds.
I, and the other marshals, always try to take the pressure off the riders on the route and let them know it’s not a race but a fun challenge, which I think shows in the atmosphere as everyone is always excited and looking forward to their team setting off with just the right amount of adrenalin to get them going. Oh, and the odd bacon butty at the Brecon start which are too good to say no to!
Thank you to you all on behalf of all the families who have ever used Tŷ Hafan and I look forward to seeing you all again this year. I can always remember a group of lawyers and judges from a few years ago who did the challenge and we rode with them most of the way having a laugh. They summed up the day by taking part as a personal challenge to themselves to complete the course, but with the knowledge what they were doing had a direct effect on the lives of the Tŷ Hafan children and it was a pleasure to ride with and all the other riders who I have met over the years.
