When we moved to Cardiff, towards the end of 2013, I decided that I would look for opportunities to use my previous work experience within the voluntary sector.
I knew of Ty Hafan and, so, their web advert, for an administrative volunteer, caught my eye. An initial meeting was arranged and it seemed that my skills would suit what was required and I agreed to come into the Ty Hafan office one day a week – extending that to two if any big fundraising projects were on.
I have now been helping out in the Individual Giving Department for just over a year. They are a very friendly department who have even been known to have a cup of coffee already waiting on my desk when I arrive! There is always a list of work that they need doing and I work my way through at my own pace.
The work is quite varied and keeps me on my toes! I have done lots of database work and have processed a huge number of donation payments which is great for the charity. I am now an expert at mail merging letters and have mastered the fairly temperamental franking machine.
I might have over-egged the TV Star bit! My husband and I came to see one of last year’s Christmas pantomime performances. A few months later, when Ty Hafan put out a TV appeal the commercial cut to “a couple who might consider leaving a bequest in their will”. Guess who?!
Working in the office as part of the Individual Giving team is very rewarding and I can honestly say that I even look forward to Fridays – an excellent end to the week.
Volunteering is a great way to learn new skills, put old ones to use, meet lots of great people and gain valuable work experience.
