From last month’s newsletter you might remember that we celebrated the lovely Glennys Old, our 88-year-old fundraising volunteer who reached her 20th year volunteering for Tŷ Hafan this year.

This month we’ve been recognising more fantastic volunteers who have also reached special milestones this year — and they all volunteer at our Aberdare store!

April Nicholas was the first ever volunteer at a Tŷ Hafan shop. She gave her time and support to Aberdare from the very beginning when it opened in 1999 along with her husband, Ken, who helped set it up. Now, despite suffering with lymphedema, April still volunteers when she can, sorting and pricing all of the jewellery in store. Ken still comes along too and makes sure everyone is fuelled with tea and coffee!

April was closely followed by fellow volunteer, Joan Morgan, in 1999, and Joan is still volunteering regularly on a Tuesday and Friday morning on the till.

But Aberdare’s loyal support doesn’t end there! Here’s a list of some of the long-serving volunteers at the shop:

  • April & Ken Nicholas | over 20 years
  • Joan Morgan | over 20 years
  • Susan Lawrence | 20 years this year
  • Barbara Baker | 19 years this year
  • Diane Fenwick | 15 years
  • Thomas Tiley | 11 years this year

Collectively, the eight volunteers above have over given over 120 years of service to Tŷ Hafan! So just as a small thank you, we threw them a little tea party at the shop as a opportunity to get everyone all together and to reflect on the last 20 years.

Tŷ Hafan’s volunteers are the backbone of the charity, and without the support of volunteers like April, Ken and Joan at the Aberdare shop, the care we offer life-limited children and their families at the hospice wouldn’t be possible. We’re eternally grateful for your time, your hard work and your continual support.

Thank you!

(From everyone at Tŷ Hafan)
