Walking past the beautiful Tŷ Hafan gardens with our dogs nearly every day and being musicians with a home recording studio, we were inspired to make a family collaboration fund raising music video called “ Fun in the Garden” - from the famous children's TV series “Rainbow” we used to enjoy watching back in the 70's. We asked the Sully Friends of Tŷ Hafan to help us share the video and it raised over £300 thanks to very kind donations from our family and friends. This simply wasn't enough though so began to think of other ways to use our skills to raise more.
During the lock down, staffing levels in Tŷ Hafan have reduced and families have been unable to visit their loved ones at the hospice. The Tŷ Hafan team has still been working extra hard and have adapted some of their “wellbeing” sessions to be online. Tŷ Hafan recently wrote about the benefits of ‘play’ and its power in supporting positive mental wellbeing, both for the child and the family. Art, play, music and story sessions for families online, via video calls, have given them a chance to connect, feel supported, have fun and make precious memories from the comfort of their own homes.
My husband and I have been so encouraged by the online efforts made by everyone and we really know how important music, dance and performing can be to help lift the spirits. I think we all need a boost at the moment during these strange and difficult times. Tŷ Hafan has had to cancel many of their normal fundraising activities, like their hugely popular annual Family Fun Day. Our band played for the Sully Friends of Tŷ Hafan beach party previously and our good friends played at their annual fundraising Summer Ball, all postponed this year. The runners continue to run, the quiz people quiz, the bakers bake, so what else could we do to help? With the Summer Festival season soon approaching and most local festivities cancelled, and having enjoyed watching Sullyfest Online over Easter, we saw potential in setting up a similar event we could be involved in to help Tŷ Hafan.
So, with all this in mind, and for my birthday present this year, some very talented friends have kindly agreed to join the “Perform for PPE” group to host an online Summer Festival of fun. We have a wonderful line up of amazing eclectic talent including solo acts, duos, trios, young musicians, a hula hoop show, a circus workshop, an acrobat, a fire juggler, stand-up comedy, an online dog show and a raffle. Many of the acts giving their support are full time professional artists and performers and would normally be fully booked this time of year, so we feel very lucky and honoured to have their support.
It's all been very last minute, we've only just finished setting up the event and aren't very experienced social media platformers, so hope everyone has seen it and will share far and wide. There are no mileage limitations, no muddy fields. no queueing for stinky toilets and you can sit back and watch at your leisure. The festival is a free Facebook event and will be available to watch online for 24 hours only. Fingers crossed everyone will be very generous with their donations, especially as the larger the donation, the higher the chance of winning a prize in the end of show online raffle!
Thank you team Tŷ Hafan for everything you do, we will try to help in the best way we know how, by putting on our very best performances and hopefully inspiring anyone watching to be more creative. We can't do this on our own though so need people to get involved to help put the fun into fundraising and give all the acts some thumbs up and heart emoticon feedback on the day. Thanks everyone for hopefully joining in our very unique Tŷ Hafan Summer Festival watch party.
Take care and stay safe. Lyn and Jez. xx
