dynamos go the distance

The Bald Haven Dynamos have already competed in an Everest challenge which has seen them raise over £4,000 for Tŷ Hafan, but they then decided to complete their own Ironman distance triathalon called 'Challenge 600' to raise further funds! Here all about it from Emma Pritchard who saw her husband through the journey:

Greg, Mathew, Andy, Andrew and Julian decided that in 2020 they would join together to create a fundraising team for Tŷ Hafan, a charity which was important to them all.

Then COVID happened and all the triathlon and Ironman races they had intended to take part in were cancelled one by one. The realisation that actually Tŷ Hafan now required more funds than ever hit home and they decided to still try to fundraise.

It started with 'Everesting', and supported by their wives and children (including me), they signed up to cycle the equivalent of the height of Everest remotely via Zwift. Sat on their own in their garages for hours on end, sharing photos on social media with their supporters cheering them on their challenge, they raised over £4,000.

Greg decided to take this challenge a bit differently and undertook his own 'golf putting' challenge! Julian was unwell during lockdown so had his own challenge to face, but by August the decision was made — we have to reach the £5,000 target.

So, supported by Greg plus all their families, Mathew, Andy, Andrew and Julian undertook a self-supported Ironman. Not for the faint hearted though, as without the crowds of the normal event, it was going to be a long day! The weather was dry (although very windy), but with lots of participating experience behind them, all health and safety precautions were taken to ensure that no unnecessary risks were taken. Logistics were tricky for the spectators without the advanced technology of timing chips and tracking devices, and we also had to keep count of laps to work out who would be where when, but they did it — all 4 completed the Bald Haven Ironman Challenge 600. They'd aimed to raise an extra £600, but at last count their total was just shy of £10,000!

Social media played a massive part in this figure. We were able to share the challenges as they were going through them with friends and promote the JustGiving page online. It was a true team effort with all families and friends helping to raise the money and make the events run smoothly.

Tŷ Hafan is a very special charity. We are all aware of how hard it's been for families with vulnerable children through the COVID crisis, and our very kind and generous friends got behind the team and sponsored them for this special cause .
