Last week Chris Thomas and Clair Partridge made their first visit to Tŷ Hafan since the pandemic started. The couple came to the office to place a silver leaf on our special gift tree in reception, in recognition of the fantastic fundraising they have carried out for Tŷ Hafan over the last few years.
Scarlett was just four years old when she died on September 24, 2018, and during her short life, she often came for respite care at Tŷ Hafan.
Her parents always stayed overnight at the hospice with her, but welcomed the support and the chance to catch up on some sleep while our care team helped to look after Scarlett.
Clair said they were apprehensive about coming to Tŷ Hafan at first – but the first time they left Scarlett for an hour or two while they did some Christmas shopping, they came back to find her dressed up as a princess and having a wonderful time making cards with the staff!
After experiencing such care, they wanted to give back by raising awareness and funds so that Tŷ Hafan can continue to care for other families across Wales.
Chris has taken part in many fundraisers, including half marathons and 10k runs – and earlier this year, during the lockdown Chris, Clair and some friends raised more than £2,000 for Tŷ Hafan by aiming to walk more than 1,000,000 metres in a month – eventually they completed more than 1.5 million metres!
Chris said they are constantly overwhelmed by the support and generosity by everyone that helps and supports with donations towards their fundraising efforts.
Next year Chris is intending to do the 10nTaff event, with other Tŷ Hafan fathers, brothers and uncles. This incredible challenge involves climbing ten Welsh mountains – the five highest in north Wales, then the five highest in south Wales - and then cycling the 52 miles of the Taff trail from Brecon to Cardiff. All this in 55 hours!
Chris and Clair are also huge supporters of the All Stars Ice Hockey team, who in turn have supported them by also fundraising for Tŷ Hafan in memory of the team mascot Scarlett – to date they have raised a massive £56,000!
