Sustainable fashion Challenge

sustainable fashion challenge

More and more people are becoming environmentally conscious and don’t want to wear clothes that cost the earth. An increasing desire for living sustainably and an awareness of the negative environmental impacts of fast fashion is creating a consumer shift towards second-hand fashion. Our charity shops have been stalwarts and leaders in selling pre-loved clothing for decades!

When you buy clothing from one of our charity shops, you will extend the life of these garments, reducing the environmental impact of your wardrobe, as well as helping to support children with life-limiting conditions and their families in Wales. And if that wasn’t enough, your purchase won’t break the bank and you may find a one-of-a-kind piece that no one else will own.

Why is sustainable fashion important?

  • Globally we produce 13 million tons of textile waste each year, 95% of which could be reused or recycled. Approximately 30 million items of clothing are sent to landfill every year in Wales alone.

  • 8% of all greenhouse gases come from the textile industry, that’s more than shipping and aviation combined.

  • The carbon footprint of new clothes bought in the UK every minute is greater than driving a car around the world six times!

Benefits of buying from a Tŷ Hafan shop

By shopping in one of our shops, you’re helping to stop clothes from going to landfill as well as supporting a good cause, enabling us to support children with life-limiting conditions and their families in Wales.

  • This year we will prevent 277,561 kilos of textiles going into landfill.

  • Just the money raised from selling one outfit (£10) could help us provide one hour of creative play in the hospice for a child with a life-limiting condition. These fun sessions help to develop the children’s confidence and self-esteem.

“Our Tŷ Hafan charity shops keep pre-loved fashion out of landfill and provide an opportunity to buy quality second hand clothing on your local high street. We are so lucky to receive fantastic donations from our generous supporters. I'm really excited for the Sustainable Fashion Challenge to showcase our shops, and our stock, to encourage more people to shop second hand, and sustainably, with Tŷ Hafan.”

Retail Volunteer at our Abergavenny shop

As a Tŷ Hafan volunteer I’m passionate about promoting Sustainable Fashion through second hand and Vintage clothing. I love rummaging through the rails for treasures, bringing new life to items and helping people find one of a kind pieces to cherish. The Sustainable Fashion Challenge is a great opportunity to raise awareness of fast fashion and raise funds for a valuable cause.

"Hi! My name’s Emily and I am a charity shopaholic! Not only is it good for your pocket, but it’s good for the sustainability and it’s good for charity too. One of my favourite charity shops is Tŷ Hafan. Shopping secondhand is a fantastic way to shop sustainably while helping such a good cause. Tŷ Hafan would love it if you could share your bargains on social media using hashtag #tyhafanstyle and I'm really excited to see the outfits people share on their social feeds!"
